How to summarize a long ChatGPT conversation

A ChatGPT conversation that runs long stops being useful as a record. You scroll up looking for the one thing you settled on Tuesday, and instead you're wading through fifty messages of back-and-forth, half-formed ideas, and corrections. The answer is in there. Finding it is the problem.

Why long chats are hard to summarize by hand

The obvious move is to ask ChatGPT itself: "summarize this conversation." Sometimes that works. But in a very long chat, the model is summarizing from inside the same degraded context that made the chat hard to follow in the first place. It may lean on the most recent messages, gloss over an early decision, or smooth away the correction you most wanted to remember. The longer the conversation, the less reliable its own summary of itself tends to be.

Not a play-by-play. A useful summary of a conversation captures:

What it was about — the actual topic, stated plainly.
What got decided — the points that were settled, not every option considered.
Where it stands — the current state, the latest version.
What's next — the open question or the next step, if there is one.

Everything else — the tangents, the "wait, ignore that," the three rewrites of the same paragraph — is what you're trying to leave behind.
