How to summarize a long ChatGPT conversation

A ChatGPT conversation that runs long stops being useful as a record. You scroll up looking for the one thing you settled on Tuesday, and instead you're wading through fifty messages of back-and-forth, half-formed ideas, and corrections. The answer is in there. Finding it is the problem.

You want a summary — the shape of the whole thing, small enough to read in a minute, so you know what's in the conversation without living through it again.

Why long chats are hard to summarize by hand

The obvious move is to ask ChatGPT itself: "summarize this conversation." Sometimes that works. But in a very long chat, the model is summarizing from inside the same degraded context that made the chat hard to follow in the first place. It may lean on the most recent messages, gloss over an early decision, or smooth away the correction you most wanted to remember. The longer the conversation, the less reliable its own summary of itself tends to be.

Doing it manually is accurate but slow: scroll to the top, track what got decided, note where it landed, ignore the noise. That's real work, and it's the work you were hoping to avoid.

What a good summary of a chat contains

Not a play-by-play. A useful summary of a conversation captures:

Everything else — the tangents, the "wait, ignore that," the three rewrites of the same paragraph — is what you're trying to leave behind.

How to do it with Uncook

No account, no extension.

  1. Create a share link for your ChatGPT or Claude conversation.
  2. Paste it into Uncook.
  3. Choose a brief as your output — a readable summary of the conversation.

You get the shape of the whole thing in a form you can actually scan, in the language of your conversation.

If your goal is to share the summary with another person, that's the same tool — see turning a conversation into a brief for someone else. If your goal is to continue the work in a fresh chat, you want a handoff instead of a summary — see handing off to a fresh chat.

The honest version

A summary keeps what matters and drops the rest — which means it's a judgment about what matters, and you're the final judge. Uncook aims for the decisions and the current state; skim the result and restore anything it compressed too far. It's a fast, faithful first pass over your conversation, not a guarantee that every detail you value survived the cut.

Honest about your data: a share link is fetched once through our server to read the conversation, and its content is sent once to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate your handoff — then discarded, never stored, never used for training. A share link makes the chat viewable by anyone with the URL; un-share it once you're done.
